We are a part of a community and it is important that we contribute as much as we possibly can. We will dedicate this page to giving politicians, activist, and organizations ideas for improving our Republic.
Public Education
We should not be concerned with the ordinary arguments about education because those arguments are irrelevant at this point. It does not matter if education is funded by public or private means. To educate is to make a person more intellectually sound by giving them information along with suggestions of how to use that information. The problem with the system, in New York City anyway, is that schools are not giving the children enough information to understand who they are or where they are. Schools only give enough information so that students can answer specific questions on particular examinations.
We should teach children as soon as we possibly can about literature. We should give accurate information about history of the world as well as the United States. Most importantly we must train our citizens to think critically. The Mighty Pen Center is active in offering all of these services.
All citizens should know:
1. How to sound out their A, B, C’s.
2. How to add, subtract, multiply, and divide units of numerical value.
3. At least 10 world leaders of the past and their importance.
4. At least 10 world leaders of the present and their importance.
5. Details of at least one empire of the past and one empire of the present.
HOUSING
What the United States needs is low income housing, not affordable housing. Affordable housing is a relative term. The majority of the people in this country are not relatively poor, they are poor. We would be kidding ourselves if we were to think that the working poor and impoverished will rise in economic status. Elitism and technology have made upward mobility as near to impossible as anything can be. If the only jobs that pay well are going to be those that require highly skilled people or people who can self employ, then a major portion of our society will be low waged earners. Most of the students coming out of the k-12 system are under educated at best. Many are completely mis-educated. Low waged earners deserve decent housing at the very least.
We need to have units that only charge 30% of a person’s income without a baseline. If a person has no income, how can they pay any rent. These units can be government owned, subsidized, or privately owned. At least 50% percent of the housing units in each county should be dedicated to low waged earners. These units can be single occupancy in order to accommodate the necessary units. A poor person does not need a lot of space, they just need respectable space. If structurally sound living spaces are made available to poor people, they will make them habitable.
ISRAEL AND PALESTINE
When we look at what is happening in Israel and Palestine we do not often discuss the root of the problem. The root of the struggle is one of a traumatized group vs. an overlooked people. The Palestinians were colonized by the English without ever being allowed to be a state. Instead England carved out a state for a group of people from distant lands. The European Jews were persecuted for centuries off and on. The Jews were used as scapegoats for the ills of European nations. After the holocaust of Germany, Jews were given a state right beside the Palestinian people. The Jews were shell shocked; they had no time to worry about anything other than protecting themselves from the brutality of the anti-Semitic nations. Anyone that attempts to make peace between Palestine and Israel must do so with the understanding that the foundation of the strife between the two people are: trauma and disregard.
